Today’s debut of the iconic 7th generation of the world-renown “Beetle” was bittersweet, as this is the final edition per Volkswagen. In its final production run the Bettle with coming in four models with a standard automatic transmission with Tiptronic® in four trims—S, SE, Final Edition SE, and Final Edition SEL.
Volkswagen kept true to the distinctive body shape and yet updated this edition with many of the features you have come to expect as part of your driving experience. Standard exterior equipment includes blind-spot monitors along with rear traffic alert. One thing you will notice is the use of chrome accents which should remind you of the prior models from years gone by. The rear mirrors are the same colored with integrated turn signals. The slope on the coupe seems to be more dramatic towards the rear of the car. This gives the car a more updated look while still retaining its original beetle feel. In addition to an updated body style, the keyless entry along with 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels starting on the S model help update the look of the beetle for today’s drivers.
The interior will not disappoint it is a perfect mix of new and old. Starting with the seats while they retain their classic shape they have been updated for excellent support and updated stitching. If you opt for the SEL model the seating upgrades to the sports seating from the comfortable seating. Included in all models is Volkswagen’s MIB-II touchscreen infotainment system. Using a capacitive-touch sensor the user could do pinch zooming and actions such as a swiping gesture.
The features do not stop there, with both units offering a USB port, SiriusXM radio for a three- month trial period, and HD Radio your music options are covered. The navigation system is cover by a Discover media unit that offers 2.5 D navigation with one-shot voice destination entry.
Two of the biggest positives from this final edition Beetle are the starting price at $20,895 and the warranty on the 2019 Volkswagen beetle. Per Volkswagen in their press release dated September 17, 2019, “For the 2019 model year, Volkswagen Beetle models in the United States will come with the People First Warranty, a six-year or 72,000-mile (whichever occurs first) bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty, the remainder of which can be transferred to a subsequent vehicle owner throughout its duration. The six-year/72,000-mile People First Warranty includes powertrain coverage for engines, transmissions and optional 4Motion® all-wheel-drive systems. Additionally, all the elements of the remaining warranty coverage can be transferred to a subsequent vehicle owner.” This warranty covers much more than warranties currently offered by Honda or Toyota.
The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle may be the last Beetle, and it looks to be not only easy on the eyes but also on the pocketbook not only from a sticker price but with such a strong warranty. Let’s all enjoy this fun-loving car while we still can. The last production of the beetle is slated for July 2019.
